Oh, hi! As you may have noticed, I’m not Rebecca. This week, I bring you a special bearded edition of Inbox/Outbox. Rebecca usually gives some update on her life her, so: I’m a Sagittarius, pogonophile, and I love snow. My wife and I recently finished a marathon of Gilmore Girls (a first for her), so that was awesome.
Inbox (Books Acquired)
The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro — Between the book reviews I’ve seen and the buzz on the Book Riot backchannel, I’m a little worried that The Buried Giant won’t be as good as Never Let Me Go or Remains of the Day, but Ishiguro is a recent favorite for me and this book is GORGEOUS. Seriously, just look at it! Here’s hoping it’s better than some of the reviews make it out to be.
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson — My wife and I donated to the We Need Diverse Books Indiegogo campaign and this was our perk: a signed copy of Brown Girl Dreaming. I was glad to help a great cause and get a sweet book as a bonus.
Gun, With Occasional Music by Jonathan Lethem — I’m working on the Read Harder Challenge with a small group of friends and this is our pick for a science fiction book. It’s fun and really strange, but look at that cover. Look at it! That’s a kangaroo wearing a trench coat and smoking a cigarette! Sold!
Outbox (Books Finished)
Alex + Ada Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn — I went on a binge of Alex + Ada last weekend, not only reading these two volumes but the next two single issues as well. Luna and Vaughn manage to do two things I’ve seen rarely in a comic book: subtlety and a measured pace. Alex + Ada is a love story and a story about what it means to be human, told by two great storytellers.
Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi — Another Read Harder Challenge book: a retelling of an older story. In this case, it’s a retelling of Snow White. This was a fantastic book; using Snow White as a framework for examining racism in 1950’s and 1960’s America was a masterstroke. Oyeyemi has gorgeous prose and really draws you in before dropping her bombshells.
In the Queue
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng — I’m now second on the hold list at my local library for this one. I feel like I’ve been waiting ages to read this after all the great reviews and talk about it last year. Once the hold ends, Everything I Never Told You will jump to the top of my reading list.
